Job Purpose:
The Shelter Care Technician Level II at the Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA) plays a pivotal role in the advanced care and management of shelter animals. This position includes performing intake assessments, supporting reunification efforts through Return to Owner (RTO) processes, and leading End-of-Life (EOL) services. As a key team member, the Level II Technician will provide compassionate client counseling, and ensure compliance with HSSA's high standards for animal welfare and customer service.
Essential Functions:
- Perform intake assessments, including vaccinations, behavioral evaluations, and basic medical checks.
- Conduct daily health checks and administer treatments and medications as prescribed by veterinarians.
- Maintain accurate documentation of animal health and behavior in shelter management systems.
- Facilitate the RTO process by verifying identification, completing necessary paperwork, and coordinating reunifications with owners.
- Provide tools and guidance to empower community members to assist in looking for the owners of pets in their neighborhoods.
- Lead humane and compassionate EOL services for public and in-house pets, ensuring a supportive environment for clients.
- Prepare and process animals for laboratory analysis as required.
- Cross-train in adoption duties, including facilitating potential adopter interactions and sharing information on adoptable pets.
- Counsel clients on surrender, EOL services, and available resources to overcome challenges and keep pets in their homes when possible.
- Mentor new staff in animal handling, customer service, and HSSA protocols.
- Collaborate with teams to ensure proper cleaning and maintenance of animal areas.
- Answer phone calls, respond to emails, and schedule appointments in a timely manner.
- Maintain compliance with OSHA and HSSA safety standards.
- Drive company vehicles when needed to support operations.
- Work assignments may vary depending on the department's need and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor
- Work alongside, volunteers, public work groups, and Department of Corrections
- Represent HSSA in a professional and positive manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Position RequirementsMinimum Qualifications: - High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to educate the public on HSSA policies and programs, including EOL, RTO, and adoptions.
- Compassionate and solution-oriented approach to assisting clients in crisis.
- Valid Arizona Class D driver's license or the ability to obtain one upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications: - Two years of experience in animal care, customer service, or a related field.
Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) - Bilingual (Spanish)

Working Conditions: Work is performed at an animal shelter or in community settings. Must be able to handle animals of all sizes and activity levels, including safely lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds unassisted and heavier animals with team assistance. Must be able to bend, kneel, stoop, reach, and stand for extended periods. Exposure to zoonotic diseases, fractious or stressed animals, loud noises, strong odors, bodily fluids, cleaning agents, and outdoor weather conditions is expected.

HSSA is the largest charitable animal welfare and protection agency in Southern Arizona with 100+ employees and 1300 volunteers. In 2018, HSSA moved into a new state-of the-art animal shelter and spay/neuter clinic.
