The English Teacher at Eastpointe High School is responsible for helping students develop critical reading, writing, and communication skills while re-engaging them in their educational journey. This role is ideal for an educator who believes in second chances and is passionate about working with students who have not found success in traditional school settings.Eastpointe operates within a alternative high school model, where flexibility, relationships, and consistency are key. The English Teacher will provide high-quality, standards-aligned instruction while supporting a blended learning environment and contributing to a culture focused on student persistence, credit completion, and graduation.At Eastpointe, every staff member is a mentor. All teachers are responsible for guiding students through both their academic work and personal development, including consistent use of the student journal.Key ResponsibilitiesInstruction & LearningDeliver engaging, standards-aligned English Language Arts instruction (aligned to Arizona state standards)Support students in both direct instruction and blended/online learning environments (e.g., Edgenuity)Teach core ELA components including reading comprehension, writing, grammar, and critical thinkingDifferentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs, including students who are credit-deficient or significantly behind grade levelProvide targeted writing support and feedback to improve student performance and confidenceFacilitate small group instruction, discussion-based learning, and individualized supportStudent Engagement & SupportBuild strong, consistent relationships with students to increase --engagement and retentionSupport students during the first 90 days of enrollment, a critical period for persistenceCreate a classroom environment that is structured, supportive, and focused on growthEncourage student voice, confidence, and ownership of learningMentorship & Student DevelopmentServe as a mentor for a small caseload of studentsMeet regularly with assigned students to set goals, monitor academic progress, and provide guidanceConsistently guide students through the student journal, facilitating reflection, accountability, and life-skill developmentEnsure student journal completion is meaningful, not transactional, driving real conversations and behavior changeHelp students develop and stay aligned to an individualized graduation planAct as a consistent, trusted adult supporting students through challenges and transitionsCollaborate with staff to ensure alignment and consistency in how the student journal and mentorship model are implementedCollaboration & TeamworkPartner with teachers, mentors, registrars, and leadership to support each student's individualized learning plan and credit recovery pathwayParticipate in team meetings focused on student progress, interventions, and retention strategiesCommunicate regularly with staff regarding student performance, attendance, and engagementAssessment & AccountabilityTrack and document student progress, grades, and course completionUse data to identify gaps and adjust instruction and interventionsMaintain accurate records in compliance with school, district, and state requirementsCulture & Mission AlignmentModel and reinforce Eastpointe's commitment to relationships, accountability, and resultsEmbrace and execute the belief that mentorship and personal development are as important as academicsContribute to a culture that is hungry, humble, adaptable, and people-smartSupport initiatives that improve student retention, engagement, and graduation outcomesQualificationsRequiredValid Arizona Teaching Certificate (Secondary English or appropriate certification)Bachelor's degree in English, Education, or related fieldStrong classroom management and relationship-building skillsAbility to work effectively with at-risk and non-traditional student populationsPreferredExperience in dropout recovery, alternative education, or credit recovery modelsExperience with blended learning platforms (e.g., Edgenuity)Experience supporting struggling readers and writersExperience in mentoring, coaching, or advisory rolesKey CompetenciesRelationship-Driven: Connects quickly with students who may be disengaged from schoolAdaptable: Thrives in a flexible, non-traditional learning environmentResults-Oriented: Focused on credit completion, literacy --growth, and graduation outcomesMentor-Minded: Sees mentorship as a core responsibility, not an add-onStrong Communicator: Able to teach, coach, and provide meaningful feedback effectivelyCollaborative: Works well within a team-based, student-centered model
