POSITION: Food Service Assistant

PROGRAM/DEPARTMENT: GAP Kitchen

REPORTS TO: Sous Chef

SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION: Yes

STATUS: PT or FT / Hourly / Exempt from Overtime

HOURS WORKED: Varies, includes nights and weekends

PAY: Starts at minimum wage (DOEE)

JOB SUMMARY: The dish and general utility position is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and sanitation standards for the kitchen and its tools using manual cleaning methods. This position also ensures the dishwashing area is maintained as a clean, safe, and sanitary facility. Delivery of meals and catering events are also a part of this important job.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Follow GAP kitchens standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the position.
  • Sorting, washing, rinsing and sanitizing dirty dishes, glass, tableware and other cooking utensils.
  • Sort and stack clean dishes; place them upside down (when applicable) in their designated location(s), or where they

    are stored.
  • Wash pots, pans, and trays by hand (manually).
  • Remove trash and garbage to the dumpster/recycle or compactor.
  • Set-up and break-down dishwashing area.
  • Ensure proper temperature and planned preventative maintenance (PPM) of the sinks are maintained and recorded as

    per the SOP.
  • Fill/empty soak tubs with cleaning and sanitizing solutions.
  • Sweep/mop floors.
  • Clean fridges, freezers, food storage containers as requested or needed.
  • Deliver meals as requested by the chef/sous chef. Including but not limited to all meal periods and catering events as

    scheduled.
  • Assist with the setup, monitoring and breakdown of catering events as requested.
  • Motivate and assist in leading volunteers, students and co-workers to promote a positive environment.
  • Represent GAP to the public in a positive, professional and responsible manner; this includes co-workers, interns,

    volunteers and/or students.
  • Teach students how to properly perform tasks, as outlined by the chef/sous chef.
  • Personally grow in leadership and spiritual life, including conducting yourself professionally and ethically.
  • Follow the agency chain of command in a responsible and supportive manner. Be able to accept constructive feedback

    and suggestions for improvement.
  • Assist with prep work as needed.
  • Provide input on, at least, annual reviews for self, manager, and peers.
  • Perform other appropriate tasks as assigned or requested by management.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be able to read labels on chemicals.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety procedures.
  • Ability to maintain professional demeanor in high-stress situations.
  • Be physically fit to perform job requirements and functions.
  • Have personal attitude, conduct and standards representing those qualities and values reflected in the ministry that

    young adults and others can respect and emulate.
  • Be able to respect and work cooperatively with a variety of persons, including coworkers, members of the board, food

    program clients, representatives of social service agencies, the public, and volunteers.
  • Have the ability to stay calm in tense situations and utilize common sense and logic.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Successfully pass FBI Fingerprint Clearance check and Obtain a Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card needed prior to or within 30 days of hire.
  • Successful clearance of criminal background check(s) and CBC background check through Central Registry in Arizona, prior to or within 30 days of hire
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Must have a valid driver license in effect for at least 3 years, meet the insurability requirements of GAP Ministries and

    provide a 60-month safe driving record (MVR) from Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Must pass mandatory tuberculosis and drug screen as required by GAP Ministries and/or appropriate licensing authority

    if requested.
  • Agree to flexible hours. Primary purpose is to support the ministry as needed. Flexibility and reliability are critical in

    meeting ministry requirements.
  • Be able to perform various physical tasks, including but not limited to the following:
  • Lifting of up to 50 lbs.
  • Lift and/or carry bags/boxes with and without assistance.
  • Kneel, bend, stoop and lift freely and without risk of injury as needed to perform job requirements. o Required standing for extensive periods of time. .
  • Obtain a SERV safe manager certification needed prior or within 30 days of hire.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the functions. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to walk and stand during the entire shift. The employee frequently must lift and carry racks or stacks of dishes, glassware, and other utensils, weighing up to 30 pounds, up to 50 times per shift. The employee occasionally lifts and empties trash cans weighing up to 50 lbs., with assistance, up to two times per shift. The employee frequently bends, stoops, reaches, pushes and lifts. The employee works primarily indoors in a hot, damp environment with some work done outside. This position required the occasional exposure to sharp machinery, broken glass, metal cans, and heat sources with some potential for injury. The employee is frequently required to wash hands. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
