Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist

Description:

PLEASE NOTE - This position may require temporarily relocation to other TONHC Facilities: Sells Hospital, Santa Rosa Health Center, San Simon Health Center, and San Xavier Health Center.

Position Summary:

Services, repairs, and maintains all medical equipment in accordance with standards and safety codes, and regulations.

Scope of Work: The position is located in the TONHC. The incumbent works under the general supervision of the Biomedical Equipment Support Supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Depending on the area of assignment, an incumbent may not be required to perform some of the duties listed below):

  • Supports patient diagnosing and treatment by installing, testing, calibrating, and repairing biomedical equipment.
  • Evaluates new biomedical equipment by conducting tests, ensuring adherence to codes, making modifications.
  • Maintains biomedical equipment by completing preventive maintenance schedules; conducting tests following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting and repairing malfunctions; calling for special service; evaluating service contracts; maintaining equipment inventories.
  • Investigates medical equipment hazard reports and device recalls; makes recommendations to supervisor.
  • Trains users on biomedical equipment operation by providing equipment operation demonstrations, instructing other healthcare staff in equipment use and care, answering questions, providing information.
  • Evaluates proposed biomedical equipment performance by studying machine-patient interaction, conferring with equipment users, developing modifications, collaborating with equipment manufacturers.
  • Maintains biomedical equipment supplies inventory by checking stock, anticipating needs, placing and expending orders, verifying receipt.
  • Prepares biomedical reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Maintain vacuum and sterilizer systems.
  • Safeguards patient information and keep the information confidential.
  • Maintains a safe and healthy working environment by conducting safety tests, recommending and complying with procedures, training and guiding medical and healthcare personnel, complying with codes.
  • Updates job knowledge by attending and participating in educational opportunities, reading technical publications, maintaining personal networks.
  • Accomplishes organization goals by taking ownership of achieving new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Complies with safety rules and regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Maintain required reports and records.
  • Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Knowledge of the current standards and safety codes for biomedical equipment.
  • Knowledge of the installation and maintenance of biomedical equipment.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems and their components.
  • Skill in installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and testing biomedical equipment.
  • Skill in operating equipment and tools.
  • Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
  • Ability to use electrical schematics, blueprints, troubleshooting manuals.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict timelines.
  • Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.
  • Ability to travel.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree in Medical Equipment Technology or related field and one year experience in equipment repair or an equivalent combination of education from an accredited college or university and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and a National FBI fingerprint check are required to determine suitability for employment, including a 39-month driving record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham language and English as a condition of employment.
