Position Summary
This position is responsible for leading major natural gas engineering projects, including strategic system expansions, new business work, highpressure steel replacements, and district regulator station designs. The Engineer III oversees project scoping, design, estimating, bidding, and construction coordination, while ensuring technical and regulatory compliance. The role also provides guidance to junior engineers and technicians and supports crossfunctional alignment across engineering, sales, and construction teams. The successful candidate will work as the primary engineer and project manager on multiple projects of moderate size or portions of major projects to be developed with others.
Essential Functions:
• Trains and mentors less senior engineers and technicians. Provides technical direction to team members.
• Oversee and approve designs, by performing systematic reviews of work and answering questions on difficult issues.
• Designing medium to large scale, gas transmission and distribution projects including pipelines, meter/regulator stations, gas plants, and production facilities.
• Directs less senior engineers and technicians in preparing designs, proposals, graphs, planning layouts and summaries designed to communicate project plans, progress or results.
• Serves as project manager for the entire project life cycle; assists in determining project objectives on the development of a comprehensive project design, outlines project requirements, assigns tasks, coordinates project activities with other operating units to facilitate participation of appropriate staff on project, supervises progress to ensure objectives are met.
• Develops design options or recommendations to improve system optimization. Assesses feasibility of engineering solutions.
• Meet, negotiate, and collaborate with city and state officials, engineers and construction contractors to resolve conflicts in a timely manner and relay company policy, procedure and other information related to the gas industry.
• Ensure compliance with all engineering principles, gas operating standards and all applicable codes, mandates and statutes.
• Perform other special projects and assignments as required.
Qualifications
Required Background:
• Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology areas, Mechanical or Civil preferred, with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
• Master's degree with 3 years of relevant experience.
• Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
Required Skills:
• Good technical and computer skills
• Basic proficiency in MS Office
• Basic proficiency in AutoCAD, GIS and other computer assisted design software
• Strong leadership skill
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Excellent analytical skills
• Engineering background with knowledge of gas engineering principles and theories, operation of gas systems, and financial and statistical analysis
• A minimum of three years in specifically Engineering Design, Construction, or Project Management
• Familiarity with USDOT Part 192 and the Natural gas industry/pipeline industry
Preferred Skills:
• An EIT or Professional Engineering License
• Certified Project Manager
