Job Summary

The Activity Planner coordinates daily physical activities for the Liogue Senior Center Elders and encourages their involvement in the programs offered at the Center.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Under direction of the Senior Center Program Manager, plans activities for the elders.
  2. Develop activity rosters; ensure that transportation, seating arrangements, meals, snacks, room assignments, medications, and all other essential needs of elders are secured prior to the activity.
  3. Escort elders to planned events and/or activities.
  4. Observe elder behavior in order to function as part of the center assessment team.
  5. Encourage and stimulate elders to become involved in activities appropriate to his/her individual needs and level of functioning.
  6. Lead elders in participation of exercise programs during the day of scheduled activities to ensure elders are not subject to any situations that may tax them beyond their physical capabilities.
  7. Assist elders with and aids in movement around the center and to their vehicle.
  8. Participate as a team member in planning and implementing appropriate therapeutic and recreational activities.
  9. Cooperate with other staff in cleaning and maintaining equipment.
  10. Attend in-service education programs.
  11. Report any relevant information, on an individual's progress, to the Senior Center Program Manager.
  12. Assist Manager with developing an activities budget and prepare cost projections for activities.
  13. Assist the Senior Center Program Manager with monitoring the National Indian Council on Aging (NICOA) volunteers who may assist with the plan activities.
  14. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by supervisor or director.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:
  • Age and culturally appropriate activities for seniors, including physical, arts and crafts, developing clubs or group activities designed for specials interests and educational or interest based field trips and speakers;
  • Safety precautions and procedures involving the elderly;
    Therapeutic, recreational, nutrition and socialization programs;
  • Training needs of adults with physical and /or mental limitations;
  • Sensitivity to the dealings of elders and observant of signs indicating problems elders may be experiencing;
  • First aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR);
  • Yaqui culture, customs, resources and traditions and/or a willingness to learn.

    Skills and Abilities:
  • Communicate effectively with the disadvantages, elderly, and disabled person;
  • Prepare and maintain reports and records;
  • Interact effectively with individuals, families, and community groups;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public;
  • Follow written and verbal instruction;
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing;
  • Operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer and related software applications;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, management, Council members, and the public.Have ability to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive verbal and written work instructions.
Education, Certifications and Experience Required

High School Diploma or GED plus 1 year of related work experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
AND
  • Age 55 and over preferred;
  • Related work experience in geriatrics preferred, but not required;
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is required, trilingual English/Spanish/Hiaki is preferred.
Special Requirements:
  • TB Screening;
  • Must obtain a First Aid & CPR Card within ninety (90) days of hire. Failure to maintain current First Aid & CPR Card will result in removal from this position;
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License;
  • This position will require the incumbent to work non-traditional hours, nights, and weekends;
  • Must have a current Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card or be able to obtain the Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card within ninety (90) days of hire. Failure to maintain a current Level 1 Clearance Card will result in termination.
