Research Engineering Technician II, Orthopedic Surgery

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, College of Medicine Tucson at the University of Arizona, is seeking a qualified applicant for a full-time Research Engineer Technician II position. This individual will perform research, technical, and computational laboratory duties and assist in human and animal biomechanics studies. These duties include designing and engineering custom biomedical instrumentation sensors for nerve stimulation and recording of muscle-tendon mechanics during in situ and in vivo experiments, and developing 3D kinematic and kinetic tracking of the body during in vivo experiments for whole-body and limb mechanical analyses. The Research Engineer Technician II will also assist with mentoring and training undergraduate/graduate students in the laboratory.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Ordering, storing, and maintaining laboratory items, supplies, and electronics in both human and animal lab spaces. Supplies come from several companies such McMaster-Carr, DigiKey, Jameco, etc. Troubleshoot laboratory problems (e.g., instruments, motors, electrical wiring, and software/data collection issues etc.). These duties include using reverse engineering skills to identify problems when equipment malfunctions and devising solutions to revive equipment to working order.
  • Assist with data collection and analysis, guided by principles of physics and bio signal processing related to whole-body and limb mechanics in human and animal movement studies. Compile information and materials that support statistical analyses, manuscripts, and grant applications.
  • Support the ordering of supplies, routine maintenance, and care of laboratory animals (e.g., birds). Collaborate with University Animal Care to provide appropriate enrichment, including helping construct and install custom ramps, perches, and foraging structures.
  • The applicant will be provided opportunities to expand the lab capabilities through new data capture methods, sensors, and other instrumentation methods.

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering preferred or equivalent learning through research experience. Minimum skills include computational programming (Matlab, LabView, Python, etc) and sensor instrumentation, signal capture, and processing.

The rate of pay for this position is $20.33-$25.41 per hour.
