Job Summary

The Police Officer performs law enforcement, crime prevention duties and other general police services in the preservation of public safety, property, prevention, detection, and investigation of crimes; enforces Federal, State, Tribal Laws, and ordinances.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

The Police Officer:

  1. Patrols assigned areas, investigates activities, performs surveillance, and enforces local, state, and federal laws as necessary for safety and security.
  2. Responds to calls for service pertaining to criminal activities/civil complaints; secures the scene, conducts preliminary investigations, and establishes law and order.
  3. Conducts follow-up investigations as assigned, appears in court to present evidence, and testifies as needed.
  4. Prepares, reviews, and revises reports; ensures accuracy and completeness.
  5. Compiles information for further analysis and use by supervising officers.
  6. Prepares for and prevents criminal activity through proper training and effective safety procedures; attends training as required for certification.
  7. Participates in community events to promote the department's image and programs.
  8. Performs the functions of a police officer and must demonstrate the ability to perform any related duties that may arise.
  9. Prepares written replies to correspondence.
  10. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by supervisor or director.

  • Law enforcement principles and practices
  • Report preparation techniques
  • Interview techniques and practices
  • Evidence rules and regulations
  • Police methods, techniques and procedures
  • Department policies, rules, regulation, procedures and unit functions
  • Federal, state, Tribal Criminal Codes and ordinances
  • Jurisdictional relationships among federal, state, tribal and local ordinances and codes- applicable to Indian Country
  • Civil and Criminal Liability issues in Law Enforcement
  • Law enforcement equipment and weaponry
  • Yaqui culture, customs, resources and traditions and/or a willingness to learn

Skills and Abilities:

  • Use a variety of law enforcement firearms and assigned equipment
  • Prepare clear, concise, accurate and complete written and oral reports
  • Exercise good judgment in relating to people and adjusting to dynamic situations
  • Interview and obtain statements from witnesses, victims and suspects
  • Comprehend, retain and recall factual information
  • Demonstrate moral character and ethical decision making
  • Maintain a professional image in all circumstances
  • Maintain uniform attire or personal dress in a professional manner that reflects positively on the department

  • Understand, apply and enforce the Use of Force Policy and always use the minimum amount of force necessary for any situation

  • Operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer and related software applications
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, management, Council members, and the public. Have ability to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive verbal and written work instructions.

Education, Certifications and Experience Required

Required: High School Diploma or a GED Certificate, plus six (6) months experience as Police Recruit or trainee with the Pascua Yaqui Police Department.

Preferred: Lateral Police Officer applicants must be certified Police Officers in the State of Arizona and must have one (1) year experience as a certified officer.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be a citizen of the United States
  • Must not have been convicted of any offense that would be considered a felony by the State of Arizona or the United States Government
  • Must not have been dishonorably discharged from the United States Armed Forces
  • Must not have a domestic violence conviction in any jurisdiction; restricts the ability to possess firearms
  • May be required to obtain additional certifications; depending on assignment
  • No formal disciplinary action within one (1) year prior to the time of appointment
  • Must not have been convicted of or adjudged to have violated traffic regulations governing the movement of vehicles with a frequency within the past three years that indicates disrespect for traffic laws or a disregard for the safety of other persons on the roadway

Special Requirements:

  • Must have a current Arizona P.O.S.T. Certification
  • This position will require the incumbent to work non-traditional hours, nights, and weekends
  • Must have an FBI, BIA, Tribal Court background check, an Arizona POST Clearance, to include, a Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card. Failure to maintain a current clearance from the aforementioned agencies will result in termination

In addition to meeting P.O.S.T. requirements, must be able to:

  • Pass a medical examination including vision screening and drug testing; must obtain immunizations and medical tests as required to be able to work in patient care and high risk areas
  • Demonstrate that he/she has a good driving record
  • Meet written departmental standards on appearance/grooming
